Anyone who Googles uses open source software, because Google applications run on open source software. Google also depends on the Internet, which itself is dominated by open source applications. And open source software development thrives on what the Internet provides. Several members of the Apache Software Foundation are affiliated with Google ( see What is Open source?). It is in Google’s interest to contribute to this project that is a critical part of the networked infrastructure.
Most large businesses use open source applications, in some form. They have access to the technical resources needed for implementation and maintenance. In addition, they are well-informed about open source applications, despite the lack of marketing. Smaller companies and individuals also use open source software, although this usage is quite limited. They may hear about it from a friend or technical publication, and are either tech-savvy or have someone who can help them technically.
